I've set up a new machine at home this week, to act as my file server. This has taught me several new things:

• Don't remove the partition that has your root filesystem. Especially not while the system is running.
• On the other hand, if you have good backups, restoring the system to a known working state is very quick.
• 1000 Mbit/s is much faster than 100 Mbit/s. Checking your cables is not a stupid thing to do and can save hours of time to copy files.
• It is not good for productivity to mix up hosts.allow and hosts.deny.
• If local disk access is slow, serving NFS is not going to be fast.
• If you're used to a really fast CPU, and apt-get update is taking a long time, control-C in the wrong terminal won't make it faster.
